Corporal Francisco Gomez of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry based in Edmonton, Alberta was one of two Canadian soldiers killed on July 22, 2006 when a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into their convoy approximately 5 kilometres west of Kandahar City on Highway One. Cpl. Gomez was traveling in a combat service support convoy that was returning to Kandahar Airfield after successful operations in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. Eight other Canadian soldiers were injured in the same incident.

The two soldiers were the 18th and 19th Canadian's killed in Afghanistan since 2002.
