Military officials say Master Cpl. Jeffrey Scott Walsh -- with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Man. -- had just arrived in Kandahar some six days ago.

He had been returning from a routine patrol west of Kandahar when there was an apparent unintended or accidental discharge of a weapon by another soldier.

Walsh is the sixth Canadian soldier to die in the past week and the 25th soldier killed in the mission in Afghanistan. His death is under investigation by the military's National Investigation Service.
