1,000 Candles Required to Light the Fenelon Falls Cenotaph on November 10, 2008

Once again the main street of Fenelon Falls will be lit with hundreds upon hundreds of candles carried by the community in silent tribute to Veterans both past and present.  The candles are placed by family, friends, The Royal Canadian Legion and children of the community in remembrance of loved ones who served or are serving in Canada’s military.  Those who have no military connection can sponsor a candle in tribute to The Unknown Soldier, those who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan or bear a suitable tribute message.

When the procession arrives at the Cenotaph, the candles are placed around the base of the monument one by one and a brief ceremony of remembrance marks the occasion.  Organizer Arlene Colman, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch Poppy Chairman, hopes 1,000 candles will flicker in silent tribute to our Veterans who served and continue to serve in the cause of peace and freedom.

Our goal is to have 1,000 candles illuminating the Cenotaph this year. As a result of the mission in Afghanistan we are all painfully aware of the cost of war, not in terms of dollars and cents, but in life and limb.  To date 93 Canadians have been killed and thousands injured.  They did their job and now it is time for us to do our job by remembering their sacrifices.Candles are available for sponsorship for a minimum donation of $6.00. All funds raised go to the Poppy Trust Fund for the benefit of Veterans and their dependants, low rental housing and care facilities for elderly/disabled and community medical appliances and medical research.

You can help us reach our goal. You may sponsor your candle by e-mailing Arlene Colman at iacolman@sympatico.ca providing your name, phone number and your tribute message. Please make your subject line Candlelight Sponsorship. You may also phone (705) 454-1849. Your donation, a minimum of $6.00 per candle should be sent to:
